Adobe Photoshop is revolutionizing photo editing with the introduction of powerful new generative AI features, making it significantly easier to seamlessly integrate or remove objects and people from images. These updates, rolling out across desktop, web, and mobile platforms, are powered by Adobe’s Firefly Image Model and aim to streamline complex tasks, reduce manual effort, and enhance creative workflows for a broad range of users, from professional designers to casual social media creators.

One of the most significant new features is “Harmonize,” which was initially previewed as Project Perfect Blend at Adobe MAX in October 2024. Harmonize intelligently analyzes new objects and their surrounding context, automatically adjusting color, lighting, shadows, and visual tone to create a cohesive and realistic composite with minimal clicks. This tool is particularly beneficial for tasks such as creating surreal composites, developing dynamic campaign visuals, or experimenting with whimsical digital art, significantly reducing the need for time-consuming manual adjustments. Harmonize is available in beta for Photoshop on desktop and web, and in early access on iOS.

Another highly anticipated addition is “Generative Upscale,” now in beta for Photoshop desktop and web. This feature allows users to enhance image resolution up to eight megapixels without sacrificing clarity or detail. Generative Upscale is a valuable tool for photographers refining edits, enhancing images for print or delivery, or revamping older files. Social media managers can also leverage it to adapt assets for various platforms. While dedicated AI upscaling programs exist, Generative Upscale offers a convenient in-program solution for those who prefer to keep their editing within Photoshop.

The update also brings improvements to Photoshop’s existing “Remove” tool. Powered by the latest Adobe Firefly Image Model, the enhanced Remove tool offers greater precision and quality for eliminating unwanted elements from images. It now blends edges more accurately and generates more realistic content to fill the gaps, resulting in cleaner and more professional edits with fewer visible artifacts.

Beyond these core features, Adobe is also introducing “Projects” in beta for Photoshop desktop. This new feature aims to simplify asset organization and collaboration by providing a centralized workspace for grouping and sharing files. Projects addresses common pain points like scattered files and fragmented collaboration, enabling users to share entire collections at once and streamline team workflows. Furthermore, a “Gen AI Model Picker” has been added to Photoshop, allowing users more control over the style and output of Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools by switching between different Firefly models.

These advancements underscore Adobe’s commitment to integrating AI into Photoshop to make complex image editing more intuitive and accessible. By automating tedious tasks and providing intelligent assistance, Photoshop empowers creators to focus more on their artistic vision and less on the technical intricacies of photo manipulation. The availability of these tools across desktop, web, and mobile platforms further ensures that users can bring their creative ideas to life wherever inspiration strikes.
