Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI as Top Enterprise AI Model Choice

Anthropic’s AI models have emerged as the leading choice for enterprises, surpassing OpenAI in market share by usage. A new report from Menlo Ventures, released on Thursday, indicates Anthropic now commands 32% of the enterprise large language model market, while OpenAI holds the second position with 25%.

This shift marks a significant reversal from just two years ago. In 2023, OpenAI held a dominant 50% of the enterprise market share, with Anthropic at a mere 12%. Since then, OpenAI has experienced a sharp decline in enterprise adoption, while Anthropic’s presence has steadily expanded. Google’s models have also seen increased enterprise usage during this period.

Anthropic’s lead is even more pronounced in the realm of enterprise coding. The company holds a substantial 42% of this specific market segment, more than doubling OpenAI’s 21% share.

The foundation for Anthropic’s rapid ascent, according to the report, was laid by the release of its Claude 3.5 Sonnet model in June 2024. This momentum was further accelerated by the introduction of Claude 3.7 Sonnet in February 2025.

These findings from Menlo Ventures corroborate anecdotal evidence within the industry, where enterprise and startup developers have increasingly favored Anthropic’s Claude over OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While Anthropic gains ground in the enterprise sector, OpenAI maintains a strong foothold in the consumer market, reporting over 2.5 billion prompts sent to ChatGPT daily.

The Menlo Ventures report also sheds light on enterprise preferences regarding model types. It indicates a strong inclination towards closed-source models, such as those offered by Anthropic and OpenAI. More than half of surveyed enterprises reported no usage of open-source models. Furthermore, the share of enterprise daily workloads utilizing open-source models has declined from 19% at the beginning of 2025 to just 13% by mid-year. Within the open-source segment, Meta continues to hold a dominant position.
