The gaming world is rapidly entering a new era of stringent age verification, driven by legislative efforts like the UK’s Online Safety Act, which came into full force on July 25, 2025. This landmark legislation mandates that online platforms, including social media, dating apps, and those hosting adult content, implement robust age checks to prevent minors from accessing harmful material. However, even as these systems roll out, users are already finding ingenious ways to circumvent them, and the specter of sophisticated AI-generated fakes looms as the next formidable challenge.
Within hours of the UK’s Online Safety Act taking effect, clever workarounds began to emerge. Discord, a popular platform among gamers, introduced a facial scanning verification system (K-id) for its UK users to comply with the new rules. Yet, users quickly discovered a peculiar exploit: they could bypass the system by using the photo mode of the video game Death Stranding. By taking a selfie of the game’s protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges, and manipulating his in-game expressions, users successfully tricked the verification, which requires facial movement like opening and closing the mouth to confirm a real person. This unexpected “gaming character” hack highlighted the immediate vulnerabilities of nascent age verification technologies. Beyond such creative gaming-centric exploits, a more widespread method of circumvention has been the surge in Virtual Private Network (VPN) usage, allowing users to mask their location and appear to be browsing from countries without such strict age-checking laws.
While these initial bypasses are concerning, a far more insidious threat is on the horizon: AI deepfakes. These artificially intelligent creations can generate hyper-realistic images, videos, and audio that mimic real individuals, their voices, and even their mannerisms. The technology, increasingly accessible to anyone with a laptop, can be used to create convincing fake identification documents or manipulate live camera feeds during a verification process. Deepfake fraud attempts have skyrocketed by 3,000% in recent years, becoming more sophisticated through multimodal approaches like converting text to video or images to video. Alarmingly, testing by security firms has revealed that many leading online identity verification systems are highly vulnerable to deepfake attacks. This escalating arms race between verification technology and AI-powered deception poses a profound challenge to the integrity of online age checks.
The current landscape of age verification is fraught with technical limitations and privacy concerns.
