Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, has even speculated that AI could be “10 times bigger than the Industrial Revolution, and maybe 10 times faster.”
This shift means that intelligence, or at least the process of thinking, is increasingly shared between humans and machines. Some individuals have seamlessly incorporated AI into their daily workflows, while others have gone further, weaving it into their cognitive routines and even their creative identities. These are the “willing” – consultants adept at prompt engineering, product managers retooling systems, and entrepreneurs building businesses that leverage AI for everything from coding to marketing. For them, the landscape feels new but navigable, even exciting. Yet, for many others, this period evokes a sense of unease. Their primary concern isn’t merely being left behind, but rather the uncertainty surrounding how, when, or whether to invest in an AI-driven future where their place remains undefined. This dual risk of “AI readiness” is profoundly reshaping how people perceive the pace, promises, and pressures of this transition.
Across industries, new roles and teams are emerging, and AI tools are reshaping workflows at a pace that outstrips the development of new norms or clear strategies. The ultimate implications remain hazy, the end-game unclear. Despite this ambiguity, the sheer speed and scope of change feel momentous. Everyone is urged to adapt, but few understand precisely what that entails or how far-reaching the changes will be. Some AI industry leaders even predict the advent of superintelligent machines within a few years.
However, the history of AI is punctuated by periods of inflated expectations followed by disappointment, often termed “AI winters.” The first occurred in the 1970s due to computational limitations, and the second in the late 1980s after “expert systems” failed to deliver on their grand promises, leading to significant reductions in funding and interest. Should the current excitement surrounding AI agents mirror the unfulfilled potential of those earlier expert systems, another winter could follow. Yet, significant differences exist today: far greater institutional buy-in, widespread consumer adoption, and robust cloud computing infrastructure. While a new winter isn’t impossible, a failure this time would stem not from a lack of money or momentum, but potentially from a breakdown of trust and reliability.
Indeed, despite the immense urgency and momentum, this increasingly pervasive technology remains prone to glitches, limited, fragile, and far from dependable. While large language models (LLMs) have evolved from barely coherent outputs just a few years ago to something akin to “a PhD in your pocket,” offering near-realized on-demand ambient intelligence, their underlying fallibility persists. Chatbots built on these models are forgetful, often overconfident, and still prone to “hallucinations”—generating confident but false information. They lack persistent memory, struggling to maintain conversation threads across sessions, and they don’t “learn” in a human sense; once released, their “intelligence” is fixed. Their conversational continuity is limited to a context window, within which they can absorb knowledge and make connections, appearing remarkably savant-like.
These strengths and weaknesses combine to create an intriguing, almost beguiling presence. But can we truly trust it? The 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals a significant global divergence in AI trust: 72% in China versus just 32% in the U.S. This disparity highlights how public faith in AI is shaped as much by cultural context and governance as by technical capability. Greater trust would likely emerge if AI didn’t hallucinate, could remember, truly learned, and its inner workings were more transparent. Yet, trust in the AI industry itself remains elusive, fueled by fears of insufficient regulation and a lack of public say in its development and deployment.
This “cognitive migration” continues, often fueled by faith rather than certainty. For many, this isn’t a choice but a “managed displacement.” The narrative of opportunity and upskilling often conceals a harsher reality: some workers are not opting out of AI but are discovering that the future being built simply doesn’t include them. Belief in the tools differs from a sense of belonging within the system those tools are reshaping. Without a clear path to meaningful participation, the imperative to “adapt or be left behind” increasingly sounds less like advice and more like a definitive verdict. Even seasoned professionals who have begun using AI express concern about their job security. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged this “messy” transition in a July 2025 memo following workforce reductions, yet the unsettling reality is that the technology driving this urgent transformation remains fundamentally unreliable.
For now, exponential advances persist as companies pilot and deploy AI, driven by conviction or the fear of missing out. The prevailing assumption is that current shortcomings will be resolved through better software engineering, and indeed, some likely will be. The gamble is that the technology will work, scale effectively, and that its disruptive impact will be overshadowed by the productivity gains it enables. Success in this venture presumes that any loss in human nuance, value, or meaning will be compensated by increased reach and efficiency. The dream, conversely, is that AI will foster widespread abundance, elevate rather than exclude, and expand access to intelligence and opportunity rather than concentrating it.
The unsettling truth lies in the gap between this gamble and the dream. We are forging ahead as if taking this gamble automatically guarantees the dream, hoping that accelerated progress will lead us to a better place and trusting it won’t erode the human elements that make the destination worthwhile. But history shows that even successful bets can leave many behind. The “messy” transformation now underway isn’t merely an unavoidable side effect; it’s a direct consequence of speed overwhelming human and institutional capacity to adapt thoughtfully and carefully. The challenge is not just to build better tools, but to ask deeper questions about their ultimate destination. We are not just migrating to an unknown place; we are doing it so fast that the map is changing as we run, traversing a landscape still being drawn. Every migration carries hope, but unexamined hope can be risky. It is time to ask not just where we are going, but who will belong when we arrive.
