Apple's Siri to Gain Voice Control Over Apps
For years, Apple’s digital assistant, Siri, has largely served as a convenient tool for retrieving information, setting reminders, or initiating basic commands. While Apple showcased an “intelligent Siri” in 2024, promising deeper integration and more sophisticated information retrieval, that version has yet to materialize. However, new reports suggest that the tech giant is now testing a significantly more advanced iteration, one that could fundamentally transform how users interact with their devices by enabling Siri to execute actions across various applications purely through voice commands.
According to a recent report from Bloomberg, this forthcoming version of Siri marks a substantial leap beyond its current capabilities. Instead of merely fetching data, the updated assistant is being engineered to perform complex tasks on behalf of the user directly within third-party applications. This enhanced functionality is reportedly tied to a new version of App Intents, Apple’s proprietary framework that allows developers to expose specific parts of their applications to system-level features like search and Shortcuts.
Should this ambitious integration of Siri and the revamped App Intents framework prove successful, the possibilities for user interaction are vast. For instance, a user could verbally instruct Siri to locate a specific photograph, edit it, and then dispatch it to a contact, all without ever touching the screen. Similarly, the assistant could be commanded to post comments within a social media application or even log into a service, streamlining processes that currently require multiple taps and navigations.
To ensure broad applicability and seamless performance, Apple is reportedly conducting extensive testing of this feature with a diverse range of popular applications. These include ride-sharing service Uber, outdoor activity guide AllTrails, social media platforms Threads and Facebook, e-commerce giants Temu and Amazon, video platform YouTube, and messaging app WhatsApp. This wide array of test applications underscores Apple’s intent to make this voice-driven control a pervasive element of the user experience across its ecosystem. While the 2024 intelligent Siri remains elusive, previous reports have indicated that a comprehensive overhaul of Siri, potentially including these new action-oriented capabilities, is slated for release in spring 2026. This potential development signals a significant strategic move for Apple, positioning Siri not just as an information conduit, but as a powerful, hands-free interface for navigating and operating the entire app landscape.
