ChatGPT app hits $2B, dominates mobile AI market with $2.91 per install
OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile application has cemented its position as a financial powerhouse, generating an impressive $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023. This staggering figure, based on an analysis by app intelligence provider Appfigures, represents approximately thirty times the combined lifetime mobile revenue of its nearest rivals, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
The app’s growth trajectory has been particularly steep in the current year. From January to July 2025, ChatGPT’s mobile earnings soared to $1.35 billion, marking a phenomenal 673 percent increase compared to the $174 million earned during the same period in 2024. On average, the application now pulls in close to $193 million monthly, a significant leap from the $25 million monthly average seen last year.
To put this dominance into perspective, Grok, a key competitor, generated roughly $25.6 million during the first seven months of 2025. This means ChatGPT’s mobile revenue was about fifty-three times greater than Grok’s during this period, with Grok’s average monthly consumer spending estimated at a mere $3.6 million, or less than two percent of ChatGPT’s. While these numbers offer a clear snapshot of mobile app traction, it is important to note they do not encompass the full financial picture for these AI companies, which also derive revenue from web subscriptions and API usage.
Grok’s relatively lower mobile app performance can be partly attributed to its later entry into the dedicated mobile app market. When xAI’s Grok initially launched in November 2023, it was primarily accessible through the X platform. Standalone iOS and Android apps for Grok only became available in early January and March 2025, respectively, long after ChatGPT had established its mobile footprint.
Beyond overall revenue, ChatGPT also leads in the value it extracts per download. Globally, ChatGPT boasts a lifetime spending per download of $2.91, outperforming Claude ($2.55), Grok ($0.75), and Copilot ($0.28). The United States is a significant contributor to ChatGPT’s mobile success, with an even higher spending per download of $10, accounting for 38 percent of the app’s total revenue to date. Germany follows as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3 percent to ChatGPT’s lifetime earnings.
ChatGPT’s market leadership extends to installation numbers as well. The app has been installed an estimated 690 million times globally, overshadowing Grok’s 39.5 million downloads. This substantial lead in installations provides context for why ChatGPT frequently tops app store charts. The average monthly downloads for ChatGPT globally now stand at approximately 45 million, an impressive 180 percent increase from the roughly 16 million downloads per month recorded from January to July 2024. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, ChatGPT’s app saw 318 million downloads, nearly three times the 113 million installations during the same period last year. Interestingly, while the U.S. is a major revenue driver, India leads in terms of lifetime downloads, accounting for 13.7 percent of all installs, compared to the U.S. at 10.3 percent.
The data unequivocally demonstrates ChatGPT’s commanding lead in the burgeoning mobile AI assistant market, setting a high bar for competitors aiming to capture a significant share of consumer spending and engagement.
