ChatGPT Plus/Pro Prices Up 14% in India, Now in Rupees
OpenAI has implemented a significant price adjustment for its ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscription tiers in India, a move that will see users pay approximately 14 percent more for access to the advanced AI chatbot. This change marks a shift from the previous dollar-based payment system to new, localized rupee pricing, which, while simplifying the subscription process for Indian customers, comes at a higher cost.
Previously, Indian users opting for the premium ChatGPT Plus plan paid the equivalent of $20, roughly Rs 1,750, while the more comprehensive Pro plan was priced at $200, or about Rs 17,500. Under the new structure, the ChatGPT Plus subscription now costs Rs 1,999 per month, and the Pro plan is set at Rs 19,900. This increase also extends to the company’s Team and Business plans, indicating a broader pricing recalibration for OpenAI’s enterprise offerings in the Indian market.
The decision to raise prices in India comes despite previous feedback from the local tech community. During OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s visit to India last year, numerous startup founders and developers had highlighted the high cost of ChatGPT’s paid plans as a significant barrier to wider adoption of the technology within the country. This latest price hike, therefore, appears to contradict the expressed desire for greater accessibility. Adding to the anticipation, there were earlier reports that OpenAI was developing a more affordable “Go” plan, potentially to be launched alongside GPT-5, but there has been no official announcement or sign of this budget-friendly option to date.
While ChatGPT maintains a strong user base in India, the competitive landscape is evolving, with other players offering compelling alternatives. Perplexity AI, for instance, is providing a year of free Pro access to Airtel users, while Google’s premium Gemini AI plans include additional benefits such as increased cloud storage and bundled services like YouTube Premium. These strategies by rivals could put pressure on OpenAI to balance its pricing with market demand and user expectations in a rapidly growing AI ecosystem.
Despite the recent price adjustments in India, OpenAI’s flagship product, ChatGPT, continues to demonstrate remarkable financial success globally. According to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, ChatGPT has generated over $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023. The platform’s revenue significantly eclipses that of its competitors, having earned more than 30 times the combined lifetime spending of rival AI chatbots such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok. Furthermore, Appfigures’ data reveals that ChatGPT’s mobile application alone accounted for $1.35 billion in 2025, marking an astounding 673 percent increase over the previous year and translating to an average monthly revenue of nearly $193 million. This robust financial performance underscores ChatGPT’s dominant position in the burgeoning AI market, even as it navigates pricing strategies in key international markets like India.
