X, the social media platform led by Elon Musk, is set to integrate advertisements directly into responses generated by its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok. The strategic move, revealed by Musk during a live discussion with advertisers and reported by the Financial Times, underscores X’s concerted effort to revitalize its challenging advertising business.

This initiative follows a period of significant upheaval for X’s commercial operations, most notably the recent departure of CEO Linda Yaccarino, who had been tasked with rebuilding advertiser confidence and revenue. For Musk, the introduction of ads into Grok’s output is a pragmatic step to offset the substantial costs associated with advanced AI development and deployment. “Our focus thus far has just been on making Grok the smartest, most accurate AI in the world and I think we’ve largely succeeded in that,” Musk stated during the broadcast, acknowledging the financial realities. He added, “So we’ll turn our attention to how do we pay for those expensive GPUs,” referring to the graphics processing units that provide the immense computing power required to train and run sophisticated AI models.

Under the new plan, marketers will have the opportunity to pay for their products or services to appear as suggestions within Grok’s AI-generated responses. Musk envisions these integrated advertisements as highly relevant and helpful to users. He elaborated on this vision, suggesting, “If a user’s trying to solve a problem [by asking Grok], then advertising the specific solution would be ideal at that point.” This approach aims to transform Grok from a pure information provider into a direct conduit for commercial recommendations, potentially offering advertisers a highly targeted avenue to reach consumers at their moment of need.

Looking ahead, the billionaire entrepreneur also intends to leverage technology developed by xAI, his artificial intelligence startup, to further enhance ad targeting across the social network.
